The birth anniversary of Lord Buddha is celebrated as Buddha Purnima.

According to the Hindu calendar, Buddha Purnima falls on a full moon day in the month of Vaisakh (April/May). This year, the auspicious occasion will be celebrated on May 7, the 2582nd Birth Anniversary of Gautama Buddha. The auspicious time for Buddh Purnima is from 7.44 pm (May 6) till 4.14 pm (May 7)

Buddha Purnima is also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti. Buddha Purnima is celebrated all over Indian and even in some South-East Asian countries including Nepal.

Followers of Buddhism have been celebrating Buddhist festivals for centuries, but the decision to celebrate Vesak as Buddha's birthday was taken at the first conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists held in Sri Lanka in 1950.

It took another 49 years for the United Nations to recognise the importance of Buddha Purnima.
In the year 1999, the UN announced only that it would be celebrating Buddha Purnima at their offices and their headquarters at New York City.
